The National Library of Luxembourg was given a new building by the Münster-based architecture firm Bolles+Wilson. In the more than 15 years between the competition and completion, the building has come a long way – literally.

When the new Münster City Library building by Julia Bolles and Peter Wilson was inaugurated in 1993, the press response to the young firm’s design was enthusiastic. The two architects had won the competition six years earlier with a proposal that set a completely new tone in Münster’s city center. Unlike in many other German cities, the decision had been made in Münster after the war to rebuild the largely destroyed city center in the style of the pre-war cityscape. The new library, on the other hand, lacked anything historical. Nevertheless, it was cleverly integrated into the existing collection.

Although Bolles and Wilson took up the small-scale nature of the old town in their design, they found a language in form and materiality that was previously unknown in Germany. The large form has clear sculptural features, without borrowing from the Brutalism of the 1970s, for example. The architects divided the building into two parts with an alleyway, so that passers-by virtually walk through the reading room. The library becomes a living part of the urban fabric.

Bolles+Wilson has now been in existence for over 40 years, 32 of them in Münster, where the office moved in 1989. Julia Bolles and Peter Wilson both taught at various universities for many years. Time and again, their office was also able to realize important projects abroad. Nevertheless, they never wanted or were able to join the circle of major German offices. In essence, they remain a little like the office location of Münster: a self-confident province that has no need to look to Berlin, Cologne or Düsseldorf.

With the completion of the National Library of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, more than 25 years after the Münster City Library, Bolles and Wilson have once again put forward their ideas for this building project. The long gap in time is somewhat deceptive, as the office won the competition for the project back in 2003. However, when the building was realized in 2014, hardly anything was the same as in the original design. One thing in particular was no longer the same, namely the building site.

The architects had originally planned to convert an existing building: The National Library was to move from a dilapidated building in the city center to the Robert Schuman Building. The complex from the early 1970s was the first seat of the European Parliament. It is located directly next to the Philharmonie by Christian de Portzamparc, which was inaugurated in 2005, and the Museum of Contemporary Art MUDAM by Ieoh Ming Pei, which opened in 2006. This would have created a remarkable cultural forum on the Kirchberg plateau opposite Luxembourg’s old town. However, the conversion project proved to be difficult and in 2009 the Luxembourg Parliament decided that the National Library should be given a completely new building just two kilometers further out of town.

The “European” Luxembourg with its banks and EU institutions stretches along Avenue Kennedy between the old and new locations. Big names in modern architecture have left their mark here. Opposite the National Library, for example, is Gottfried Böhm’s Deutsche Bank representative office, completed in 1991. The new Luxembourg streetcar has been serving the Kirchberg Plateau since 2017. Thanks to the line along Avenue Kennedy, the library site is well connected to the city center.

Despite the different building site, Bolles and Wilson were essentially able to retain the basic concept of their design. They placed the foyer of the National Library at the lowest point of the building site on Avenue Kennedy. At the opposite end, near the ridge of the Kirchberg, is the book stacks. The architects have planned it as a five-storey, enclosed concrete cube. The reading room extends between the foyer and the stacks. Several stepped gallery floors lead from the level of the foyer to the “roof” of the magazine cube. There is a large reading level. The architects covered the entire large-scale “reading landscape” with an enormous wooden roof. Large triangular skylights illuminate the hall. Administration and special reading rooms enclose it at the sides.

The exterior of the library is dominated by large-format slabs of red, solid-colored concrete, which the architects used to clad their building. The surfaces of the slabs were treated differently. The result is a play of colors reminiscent of red sandstone. In contrast, Bolles and Wilson used white for the window bands and the entrance area, which looks as if it has been cut into the building.

The most beautiful element of the façade is the small “tower” with which the architects emphasize the street corner between Avenue Kennedy and Boulevard Adenauer. It gives the library an almost picturesque appearance. In contrast, the repeated triangles in and around the building appear somewhat mannered.

The main aim of the project was to develop a sustainable library. The floor space under the first floor slab is designed as a first floor cold store. A photovoltaic system is installed on the roof. There is also a controlled night cooling system. Wherever possible, the architects took into account the requirements of circularity in the materials used. The large wooden roof that spans the reading room is emblematic of Bolles and Wilson’s aspiration to develop sustainable architecture.

Will the National Library of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg be as big a success for Bolles and Wilson as the much smaller municipal library in Münster? Probably not. This is not necessarily due to the quality of their design. Rather, it has to do with the fact that the site on which they were finally able to erect their building lacks a little charm. The charm that the originally planned location opposite Luxembourg’s old town would have had. Or the charm of Münster’s city center with its sandstone-yellow gabled houses, against which Bolles and Wilson’s quarter-century-old library sculpture still forms an exciting contrast.

Architecture in Dialogue with History and the City

La Caserne Quebec is not conceived as an isolated new building, but rather as an architectural dialogue between the past and the present. The clean, geometric extension respects the historic structure of the former fire station and, in particular, highlights its striking tower as an urban landmark.

In the immediate vicinity of the Musée de la Civilisation, a complex is taking shape that sensitively combines materials and urban space, thereby strengthening the cultural axis along the St. Lawrence River.

A theater as a public gathering space

The new use by the youth theater “Les Gros Becs” requires a flexible spatial layout. At the heart of the expansion is a 350-seat theater auditorium and a multifunctional event hall.

Central to this is an open spatial concept that unfolds across multiple levels:

  • The foyer as the connecting heart
  • an open staircase as the spatial axis
  • Reading room in the former fire station
  • multifunctional spaces for education and performances

The result is a building that is deliberately geared toward a young audience while also promoting cultural participation.

Urban Planning and Public Spaces

At the intersection of Dalhousie Street and Barricade Street, a small piazzetta is being created that connects the building to the public space. It opens up a view of the Parc des Canotiers and the St. Lawrence River, transforming the theater into an urban hub.

A strategic opening through the building connects the two entrances and creates a clear, intuitive visitor flow between the city, the school, and the theater.

Materiality as Narrative Architecture

The interiors of La Caserne Quebec feature a precisely coordinated interplay of materials and colors:

  • Stone and combines these components with high-performance glass facades and energy-efficient details.

    The result is a sustainable architectural concept that conserves resources and preserves historic structures.

    By combining historic preservation, sustainable architecture, and social inclusivity, the result is a theater that not only provides a space for performances but also becomes an integral part of Québec City’s cultural landscape.

On October 2, Burkhardt-Löffler held its first joint in-house exhibition with Weha. According to Weha Managing Director Stefan Deschler, 85 participants had registered for the event. At the in-house exhibition, which was scheduled at short notice, they were able to see new machine developments in the flesh – as well as other innovations.

With large machines from Burkhardt-Löffler from all application segments of stone processing – all equipped with Weha tools – the open day perfectly demonstrated the synergies of the new partnership. In addition, Weha presented several small machines and transport equipment as well as transport vehicles from its product range. And finally, Akemi was the third partner to contribute to the success of the event with a demonstration of its product range.

In the October issue of STEIN 10/20, we reported that Burkhardt-Löffler had already explicitly invited smaller groups to machine demonstrations and factory tours at the company’s sites in Bayreuth and Langenaltheim. With the major event at the beginning of October, the machine manufacturer, together with its new partner Weha, has now provided an important additional impetus for boosting the capital goods business.

The Powerjet 3D waterjet system with the new head developed in-house was of particular interest – mainly because the machine could be experienced in action throughout the day. Software developer Benedikt Maiser also presented the company’s own calibration unit, which can be used to determine the perfect tool center point (TCP). The measuring device compensates for the wobble error of the C-axis and determines the exact distance to the focusing tube.

“We then know exactly how many millimetres we need to compensate in each direction – i.e. for the X, Y and Z axes,” explains Maiser. He uses this to set up the Powerjet 3D in the factory before delivery; the calibration unit is only needed again later if the machine is moved or the customer has had a crash.

In any case, customers appreciate the fact that they can come by with their materials before buying a machine and be shown exactly how to cut them. Maiser and his colleagues can then use the customer information and the material to make recommendations regarding the various machine parameters: from focusing tube and nozzle size and type to sand quantity and type to pump pressure.

Purchasing Manager Michael Hannweber adds with regard to the waterjet machine that the cutting head development is particularly impressive due to the hollow shaft gearbox. This means that the electrical system and high pressure can be fed directly into the 3D head, and there is no longer any need for a pipe spiral or slip ring rotary feed for the electrical signals.

Other visitor magnets were the BAZ 2000 machining center, which, according to Burkhardt-Löffler, has revolutionized the concept of the machining center with automatic suction cup positioning and loading, and the KSL 80 automatic table edging machine, where Weha presented its magnet mounting system, which has been tried and tested for more than 30 years and now has three magnets and is distinguished from competitor products by the fact that the VA buttons of the very quick-clicking triple lock are attached to the base plate instead of the tool.

Burkhardt-Löffler also exhibited the LDZ 2000 K, the compact rotary head saw in monoblock design developed jointly with partner Weha, which we had already presented in STEIN 10/2020. This compact machine can also be set up in companies with limited space. At the in-house exhibition, the machine was shown with the 400/60 UNIV-2 natural stone diamond cutting blade.

Weha also recommended its two new 400 mm Pro-Q and Weramic-yellow blades, which are especially suitable for quartzite and all types of ceramic. Visitors were not yet able to see the planned new KDL-B automatic band edger in action, but according to Stefan Deschler, there have already been many inquiries for it. Thanks to its many years of representing Comandulli machines, Weha has good contacts in the industry, especially with stone processors interested in a belt-driven edging machine.

Many visitors were also interested in the Pantograph 1215 engraving machine presented by GTech company owner Boris Malacko, and the Fuso Canter equipped with a Ferrari loader crane and the compact Roboman Junior crawler vehicle – also with a Ferrari crane – in the outdoor area were surrounded by interested parties throughout the day.

Exhibitor Akemi provided the icing on the cake of an exciting event. Application engineer Otello Piroddi and his colleagues showed, among other things, the new Akepur 250 High Tack for the safe and temperature-resistant bonding of a variety of substructure materials under ceramic, natural and artificial stone.

Another highlight from the construction chemicals manufacturer: the new color paste system, which is particularly suitable for smaller companies and very complex finishing work and, together with the Platinum adhesive, enables an almost inexhaustible variety of colors. The Spectrum Pastes case for up to 60 coloring pastes in 45 gram tubes can be purchased empty and loaded individually. Dry dedusting systems from Weha as well as the BSS 600 wire saw and the CSA 598 industrial band saw system from Burkhardt-Löffler rounded off the extensive in-house exhibition presentation.
