An award for the best German residential buildings? There hasn’t been one until now. Munich-based Callwey Verlag changed that this year. Three days ago, the “Award deutscher Wohnungsbau 2019” award ceremony took place. Baumeister editor-in-chief Alexander Gutzmer finds: The winning projects by zanderroth architekten and GRAFT show why investing in good architecture is worthwhile.

An award for the best German residential buildings? There hasn’t been one until now. Munich-based Callwey Verlag changed that this year. Three days ago, the “German HousingAward2019″was presentedin Munich. The winning projects by zanderroth architekten and GRAFT show why investing in good architecture pays off.

Germany is talking about residential construction – but still too little. And above all, Germany talks too little about what constitutes architectural quality – one could also say building culture – in the development of new residential buildings or neighborhoods. This will have been one of the reasons for the Callwey publishing house to announce a new award for pioneering residential construction. It was definitely a reason for Baumeister to get involved in the German Housing Award as a media partner. And the results, which have now been published at an awards ceremony in Munich’s Tantris restaurant, show that they exist: They do exist, the high-quality residential buildings.

For example, the winner of the first prize for new construction, a combination of four residential buildings and a supermarket in Berlin’s Prenzelberg district by zanderroth. With their heterogeneous yet coherent project, zanderroth show that a coherent overall ensemble can nevertheless be created from architecturally very different individual parts. Or the first prize conversion, the Paragon Apartments, also located in Berlin, converted by GRAFT. Projects like these show: Investments in good architecture are worthwhile, especially in city centers. And it is also worth talking about them – not only, but also in the context of events such as the German Housing Award.

You can find the complete list of award winners below. However, I would like to take up a thought from Rainer Nagel at this point. The chairman of the Federal Foundation of Baukultur was a member of the jury. And in the foreword to the book that will be published at the same time, he addresses the question of how the high quality of housing that we all demand is created. According to Nagel, this requires above all “an open, discursive culture of planning and building, in which all sides work together in a communicative manner right from the requirements and development phase”. A plea that sounds almost self-evident, but is difficult to put into practice. And this award, especially when it takes place parallel to a real estate trade fair such as Expo Real, can certainly help.

The mountain is Formula 1 for the construction industry. What works at an altitude of 3,000 meters usually also works in the valley. Wind, snow, sun, rain – you have to be able to rely on your materials in extreme conditions. This is just as true for (high-altitude) mountaineers as it is for hut keepers in the mountains of this world.

A very special training and further education program awaits 50 architects at the International Mountain Summit 2016. At the Mountain Festival of Encounters, these architects from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and South Tyrol will not only encounter extraordinary speakers, but above all the mountain itself, as well as their own inner mountain.

“Everything is difficult high up”

Topics from the world of architecture are intermingled with insights from the craft, garnished with experience reports from hut owners and builders. Specialist lectures are followed by adventure hikes, a world premiere of a mountain film and a tour of Europe’s largest construction site in the mountains. This mix of further education has never been seen before in the world of architecture.

The opening of the Intercultural Stonemasonry Project will take place on Saturday, September 10 at 1 p.m. in the Orangery in Kirchheimbolanden. After a welcome by Mr. Peter Stumpfhäuser, First Alderman of the town of Kirchheimbolanden, and a small snack in the terrace garden, a guided tour of the baroque terrace garden will be given by building researcher Achim Wendt.

The intercultural dialog project brings together German and Ukrainian stonemasonry students. The three-week program, which runs from 09.09.2016 to 30.09.2016, aims to teach the professional techniques of the stonemasonry trade and also offers the opportunity to get to know a foreign culture and its people better.

The project is largely funded by the Eberhard Schöck Foundation in Baden-Baden and the master school for craftsmen in Kaiserslautern. Here, under the guidance of master stonemasons and based on the results of the building research from the baroque terrace garden, the covering slabs for retaining walls and pedestals will be produced.

The stonemasonry work will be complemented by a cultural program. This includes expert guided tours of museums in the region, various excursions, a visit to the Otterberg Abbey Church and the Bad Münster am Stein Stone Sculpture Museum as well as participation in the concerts of the Kirchheimbolanden International Organ Masterclass. On Thursday, September 29, at 4 p.m., the graduation ceremony will take place in the suggestive barn of the Theodor Zink Museum in Kaiserslautern.
