Learning from yesterday, improving tomorrow

“Learning from yesterday today to improve tomorrow and think ahead.” – is how Gesche Gerber, Chair of the AIV Schinkel Committee, describes this year’s theme. Together with sponsors, donors, jurors and universities, the AIV uses the competition to create space for answers to current planning and design questions and a professional development opportunity for young architects, planners, engineers and artists.

A city worth living in

These current issues include climate change, the increasing scarcity of resources, social change and the mobility transition. According to Gerber, these are just a few of the many issues that planners have to deal with today. In the 200th anniversary year of the AIV, the Schinkel competition is intended to provide freedom to answer these important questions. The aim is to develop approaches, strategies and feasible plans. Creating a city worth living in is also an important topic.

Empathy, imagination and creativity

What are the qualities of such a city? What characterizes it? What requirements, design and construction processes and planning procedures are necessary? And what are the expectations for the future today?

These are all questions that the Schinkel competition also addresses. According to Gerber, the participants should take on new responsibilities and assume new roles, plan with foresight and responsibility and place particular emphasis on exemplary and conceptual quality. A holistic approach is required. Synergy effects should be exploited, for example through cooperation between different specialist areas and participatory planning processes, as well as input from other disciplines such as sociology, philosophy, medicine and artificial intelligence.

“With a view to the future, with cooperation and empathy, imagination and creativity, the aim is to find answers to the challenges of our time. A special prize will also be awarded for interdisciplinary work with a focus on resource and energy efficiency,” says Gerber.

Who can take part?

The competition is open to students and graduates of urban planning, landscape architecture, architecture, civil engineering, transport planning and related disciplines as well as the liberal arts. Participants are free to choose a location in the Berlin/Brandenburg region. The exemplary examination of the site-specific focus is therefore paramount.
