For many years, Dr. Ingrid Gräfin zu Solms-Wildenfels has been honoring women with elite potential from various disciplines with her foundation. The medical doctor established the foundation “for the promotion of disadvantaged female elites” in Frankfurt in 1994. Her Art & Culture Prize is therefore also awarded to women in fields in which they are underrepresented in leading positions, such as music, the visual arts, the film industry and architecture.
Elisabeth Endres, head of the Institute for Building Climatology and Energy in Architecture (IBEA) at the Technical University of Braunschweig, has now joined this ranks. She recently became the first woman from the field of architecture to receive the Ingrid zu Solms Foundation’s Culture Prize. The professor was nominated by the Association of German Architects (BDA). “It is a great honor for me to have been recommended by the BDA network,” says Elisabeth Endres happily. “It’s wonderful to receive an award and thus recognition for the work that you enjoy doing and put your heart and soul into.”
Climate-neutral construction and low-tech concepts
Elisabeth Endres’ research focuses on climate-neutral construction, low-tech concepts, the energy of building materials and robust and sustainable buildings. She is looking for answers to pressing questions. For example, whether there is a simpler way. In terms of building design or materials. Not always just via technical vehicles, such as a faster ventilation system. Or a larger chiller or an additional system to solve the peak load case according to the standard? Do we even need a ventilation system or a cooling system? And if so, what does the architecture achieve and what gaps in performance do we need to solve technically? And how much technology do houses really need?
Elisabeth Endres teaches and researches at the interface between architecture and technical systems
As head of the Institute for Building Climatology and Energy in Architecture at the Technical University of Braunschweig, she researches and teaches at the interface between architecture and technical systems and their integration into building structures. She also works in practice at the Hausladen engineering office (Kirchheim near Munich) as a managing director. For more than 35 years, she has been developing and implementing integral concepts in the field of tension between passive, building physics and active, building and energy technology parameters in building planning for a wide range of typologies.
Combating global warming through the construction industry
“Professor Endres’ approach is commendable: away from an obsession with technology – towards compact, versatile, simple buildings,” emphasized Marie-Theres Deutsch, architect BDA, in her laudatory speech at the award ceremony. “People like Elisabeth Endres are doing a great service in countering our society’s obsession with technology with intelligent research approaches that can also be applied well in practice. Her merit is nothing less than opposing the high level of global warming caused by the construction industry.”
Elisabeth Endres’ focus: simply building
Elisabeth Endres studied architecture at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern and the Technical University of Munich (graduated in 2007). The student, doctoral candidate and long-time employee of the Faculty of Architecture at the TU Munich was head of teaching at the Chair of Architecture, set up the “Energy-efficient sustainable building” course and was responsible for the “Concept and project” modules in the “ClimaDesign” postgraduate course. In July 2019, she was appointed to the Chair of Building Technology at TU Braunschweig. On October 1, 2019, Elisabeth Endres took up this position and the associated management of the Institute of Building and Solar Technology.
As a member of the BDA, scientific advisor to the DGNB and on the board of the Sep Ruf Gesellschaft e.V., she is actively involved in current discussions with a focus on robustness and simplicity in construction. Elisabeth Endres also presented her work to our colleagues from NXT A in a digital talk about sustainable construction. How important is sustainable construction at the moment? The Institute for Building Climatology and Energy of Architecture (IBEA) at TU Braunschweig teaches and researches at the interface of passive and active building components in architecture. The aspects of building physics and materiality of buildings as levers for climate-neutral construction are at the center of the considerations. The same applies to technical building equipment and energy supply. The aim is to develop strategies for districts and buildings that create sustainable living space with robust construction methods and simple, low-component technical systems. The focus here is on the simplicity of the structures and systems. The researchers therefore take a holistic view of envelope constructions, systems and networks. The objectives are durability and a high degree of recyclability within the material cycles.
