SINAI designs State Garden Show in Kirchheim: The Bavarian State Garden Show is coming to Kirchheim near Munich in 2024.

In two years’ time, Kirchheim in Bavaria will host the State Garden Show. The new ten-hectare park will then be ready, offering space for recreation and play in the countryside. In addition, the new local park will connect the previously separate districts of Kirchheim and Heimstetten.

The new local park in Kirchheim will be home to many native tree species, which will alternate with so-called climate trees. The latter are particularly well suited to the challenges of climate change and are correspondingly resilient. This is important. The new park, which is currently growing as part of the Kirchheim State Garden Show, will form a permanent green ribbon. This will connect the districts of Kirchheim and Heimstetten. In future, many generations from both districts will come together here. They will really grow together.

The landscape architects fromSINAI developed the planting concept for the new park in Kirchheim. It was important to them that climate-resilient and native trees are in balance. They call their concept for the Kirchheim State Garden Show: Mixed Double. SINAI thus refers to the fact that each classic, native tree species has a counterpart from the repertoire of climate tree species. In total, more than 700 trees will soon be growing in the new local park.

In addition to the trees, lawns for play and exercise and meadows will also be created in Kirchheim. Shrubs, perennials, hedges, reeds and grasses will also be added. A lot of existing greenery will also be preserved in the “wilderness” and “forest” spheres.

The “Garden sphere

The “Garden” sphere marks the start of the Kirchheim State Garden Show. It is home to the community gardens, a meadow orchard and an existing lilac hedge. In this area, the focus is on communal cultivation. For this reason, it will mainly feature trees and shrubswith edible fruit. In addition, three new vintage groves will be created in the garden, each with 100 ornamental apple trees. This new apple grove is a gift from the municipality of Kirchheim and the State Garden Show to Kirchheim’s young people born in 2021, 2022 and 2023. The grove symbolizes the motto of the Kirchheim State Garden Show “Growing Together”.

Centerpiece in the “Water” sphere

A new park lake forms the centerpiece of the “Water” sphere. At almost 7400 square meters, it forms a largewater surface. In addition, its near-natural shoreline creates a new habitat for animals and plants in Kirchheim. The sunbathing lawn on the western shore of the lake will be planted with floodplain trees. And suitable aquatic and floating-leaf plants will be selected for the water and shore zones, depending on the depth of the water. They will all enrich the area of the Kirchheim State Garden Show with a variety of new habitatsforinsects and other small animals.

The “Wilderness” sphere owes its name to the existing vegetation. The existing vegetation can be experienced here through clearings and newly created paths. However, they will not be accessible everywhere.

In preparation for the Kirchheim State Garden Show, several trees were felled and existing vegetation removed. Instead, 73 new trees will be planted elsewhere in the wilderness. In preparation for the Kirchheim State Garden Show, existing vegetation was removed last year. In return, 67 new trees will soon be growing in the “forest” sphere.

In the southern area of the Kirchheim State Garden Show, the focus is on large, indigenous flowering meadows. These provide an ideal habitat for numerous species of insects and butterflies. This special meadow area is also home to large solitary trees, individual rows of trees, lilac hedges and shrubs. They all enclose the meadow area and give it structure.

In addition to the many new trees on the grounds of the Kirchheim State Garden Show, around 200 benches will be installed in the local park. These offer people the opportunity to rest and relax. Just as for the new trees, Landesgartenschau Kirchheim 2024 GmbH is also awarding sponsorships for the benches. These can be purchased on a dedicated website from spring 2022. In this way, interested citizens and companiescanget personally involved and support the creation of the Landesgartenschau Kirchheim.

Energy wood on temporary areas

During the State Garden Show in Kirchheim, the event site will grow by a further four hectares of green space. This will complement the new ten-hectare local park in 2024. Temporaryexhibition areas will be set up here, offering space for around 50 exhibitors. They will all provide visitors to the State Garden Show with information on topics such as garden design, environmental protection, climate protection, sustainable energy andgreen mobility. From the outset, the tree plantations in these exhibition areas are intended as energy wood plantations and are committed to the theme of sustainable energy. The first trees were planted in March 2022. Once the Kirchheim State Garden Show is over, they will be processed into energy wood.

Wood plays an important role in the production of renewable energy. This is because, unlike wind and solar energy, wood can supply available energy at any time. In this way, energy wood can help to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to alternative energy sources. It can help to secure the energy supply in the long term. This is already more important than ever and a good outlook for the Bavarian State Garden Show in Kirchheim in 2024.

Boman Architectes is a Paris-based architecture firm with an additional office in Nantes. It was founded in 2017 by Claire Borgès-Maunoury and Laurent Lustigman. Since then, the office has realized projects of various sizes.

From small sports facilities to the renovation of historic buildings, from the redesign of industrial sites to temporary installations. It is therefore not surprising that they were awarded the contract to adapt the military hospital.

The site served the architects as the basis for a digital transformation. The requirement to create a dynamic center for Smart Specialization Strategies companies resulted in the adaptation of the building on Air Base 217. The building dates back to the second half of the 20th century and was carefully renovated. The military hospital by Boman Architectes was given internal insulation made of wood wool in order to preserve the original façade.

Large bulletproof glass windows were installed for use as offices, which can be shaded on the outside with green fabric. Only a few changes were made to the interior. The exposed concrete structure was left untreated, as was the necessary building technology.

The visibility of the infrastructure is intended to create an ornamentation specific to the location. The building structure itself was only altered to a small extent in order to preserve the original identity of the site.

The new entrance area is now located in the area of the original spiral staircase. From there, you can access the two office floors and the meeting room on the first floor. The latter is separated from the entrance hall by a wooden wall.

The doors have the same surface finish as the wall, giving it a monolithic appearance. Acoustic curtains were also incorporated into the meeting room to ensure flexibility. This means that either 100 people can be accommodated at the same time, or up to three separate areas can be created.

The secure office wing of the center is located on the upper floor of the former military hospital. The so-called “Room of Secrets” is also housed here. This is a wooden construction clad with steel panels on the outside and structured with a wooden grid on the inside. The ceiling inside is brightly lit.

From the outside, it is clear that this is an addition to the historic building. It is symbolic of the new function of the military hospital and its forward-looking spatial program. The “Room of Secrets” is based on the rocket launch rooms of the 20th century. The area of Air Base 217 still retains a touch of secrecy and a top secret flair.

Buchner Bründler Architekten also treated the existing building with care when converting the old coach house in Basel.

Architecture software: Why many are switching

Architectural firms are currently faced with the question: should they continue using their existing CAD software or switch to the future? Because 3D modeling and BIM are becoming increasingly important.

“We used the software we’ve always used – but at some point we couldn’t get any further.” This is the almost unanimous opinion of architectural firms that have decided to switch to ARCHICAD software. The manufacturer of the program, GRAPHISOFT, asked the architects about their motives and uncovered some interesting facts.

The 2D/3D issue is at the forefront of the reasons for switching. Many offices use software solutions that are still heavily reliant on two-dimensionality. This is not the case with ARCHICAD, where working directly on the 3D model has always been at the heart of the system. You can plan intuitively and quickly on a central model. Every change also appears automatically in all floor plans, views and sections.

This is not only extremely time-saving – it is also better suited to today’s working habits, especially those of young architects. They want to move quickly into modeling, work on the living object, so to speak, and quickly deliver presentable, veritable results. Andreas Kleboth from Linz can also observe this in his office: “We have many employees who are familiar with ARCHICAD from their studies and are therefore very experienced and very fast at creating 3D models.”

A quicker sense of space, conditions and atmosphere: this is what more and more clients are demanding. This is where many of those surveyed see ARCHICAD’s great trump card. Architect Johannes Berschneider from Pilsach describes it like this: “The final icing on the cake are the clients, who sit here with their mouths open, watching and ‘walking through the building’.” He is referring to the 3D representations with which ARCHICAD enables impressive virtual building inspections virtually at the touch of a button.

Building Information Modeling is increasingly required in tenders in order to ensure an efficient project process across all phases and between all planning participants.

Training for the changeover

Almost all offices took advantage of the extensive training and support offered by GRAPHISOFT and its local partners. For architect Irene Kristiner from Graz, the ARCHICAD basic course was particularly helpful: “The program’s functions were explained to us right from the start, we were able to work with it directly, ask our questions and receive direct feedback.”

Interesting information portal

What do the individual architects think about their software? Why did they decide to switch to ARCHICAD? And how did the changeover go? GRAPHISOFT has set up an interesting information portal with film clips about various architecture firms in Germany and Austria. More information here.
