Even though Stonetec, the traditional meeting place for the German natural stone and stone technology scene, which was supposed to have taken place last week, has been postponed until next year due to the Covid-19 crisis: The STEIN editorial team has been asking around and has been presenting you with lots of news from the materials, construction chemicals, tools & more and art foundries sectors in the 06/2020 print issue since the end of May. This news is now also appearing online – today the second installment from the rocks section, followed by construction chemicals, tools & more and art foundries.
This year, Lauster Steinbau would have presented itself at Stonetec as a partner for stonemasons, landscapers, sculptors and restorers for regional, climate-friendly natural stone with stable supply chains. Three new sandstone quarries have been opened up in recent years, so the materials Lauchheimer Sandstein, Tennenbacher Sandstein and Waldenbucher Sandstein are currently in the spotlight. Lauchheim sand stone is a yellowish-green, fine-grained, homogeneous-looking, often veined and dense iron sandstone. It is suitable for restoration and sculpture work as well as for landscaping. Tennenbach sandstone is a fine-grained, intensely red, homogeneous red sandstone. It is suitable for façade cladding, floor coverings, solid surface work and restoration work as well as for landscaping. Waldenbuch sandstone is a white to whitish-yellow, medium to coarse-grained sandstone with layered, sometimes brownish sedimentary structures. It is suitable for façade cladding, floor coverings, solid construction and restoration work as well as for landscaping. This range is complemented by the well-known and proven materials Maulbronn sandstone, Niederhofen sandstone and Gauinger travertine and the Lauster materials from the Alps: Tauerngrün, Dorfergrün and Krastaler marble. All available as sawn pieces, tranches and custom-made products.

At Natursteinwolf, the latest news is that Gotland limestone, for which the Lübeck-based company is the general importer in Germany, is Sweden’s Stone of the Year (chosen by the Swedish Natural Stone Association). The hard limestone probably began its career 400 million years ago as a coral reef on the equator. Because Sweden has been a “regional” supplier of natural stone since the Hanseatic period, this stone from the island of Gotland forms a common cultural heritage of the entire Baltic Sea region. But it has not only proven its worth on many historical buildings, it was also recently used to clad a new subway station in Copenhagen – in the Norrvange version. The hard-wearing light limestone with prehistoric inclusions comes in two other varieties(Södervange & Kappelshamn), the base color is a cream or grey (Kappelhamn). Natursteinwolf has its own homepage.

A particularly unique specimen is currently in the spotlight here: the “Rabenstein”. The red garnet inclusions are a special feature of this boulder (gneiss). The gemstone, which is enclosed here by the silvery shimmering ground mass, has long been valued by various cultures as a protective and decorative stone – whether, for example, in Greek mythology as part of the legend of the abduction of Persephone by Hades, as a burial object of the Vikings or as a protective ornament on the armor of crusaders. Traditionally, garnet is said to have magical powers and healing properties, and it is a very popular gemstone for traditional costumes. The raven stone is only available in limited quantities as an erratic boulder. A rockslide caused a stone of around 45 m³ in size and weighing around 130 tons to fall into the valley. It is suitable for kitchen tops, cover plates, stairs and floors. Currently available in all thicknesses as floor slabs in strips, strip widths of 30 and 40 cm, large-format floor slabs, raw slabs.
