SKE
Due to the cancellation of Stonetec amid the COVID-19 pandemic,STEIN is nevertheless presenting an industry reportin its June 2020 print issue featuring numerous current product updates from the fields of materials, construction chemicals, Tools & More, and art foundries. These are now also being published as an online series; here is the second part on “Tools & More.”
SKE is introducing a new product from the Dia-Ceramica series: Dia Ceramica W3 100 mm, a three-stage grinding system (plus an optional grit). It is designed for use on all materials—but especially for artificial stone or ceramics. The grit sequence is 1, 2, and 3. The very coarse grit 0 is available as an option. Use with water for better cooling of the diamonds, thereby extending service life. All diamond grinding discs are equipped with Velcro; the ideal speed is 2000 min-1 (maximum 4500 min-1). The longer grit 2 is used, the higher the gloss. The W3 pads have lower friction resistance, which reduces the risk of burn marks on engineered stone or ceramic and prevents discoloration on light-colored stones. The resulting gloss corresponds to industrial-grade gloss. A demonstration video is available on YouTube (youtu.be/Sm21qbtdhWc or search for the title “3-step hand polishing pad for Granite, Quartz, and Ceramic”).

YOUNGSUN DIATECH

South Korean tool manufacturer Youngsun Diatech has developed “Gyro-Pro,” a sanding pad made of special rubber and sintered segments, as well as “Bulls Eye,” a sanding segment for machine use that is built on the same principle. The products are designed to be compatible with all standard machines. The goal is to prevent the typical streaks that can be caused by unwanted tool vibration on hard materials such as Dekton, and to ensure that the grinding process is relatively quiet. The “Bulls Eye” grinding segment is classically sintered, and the manufacturer placed emphasis on an attractive design. During grinding, the special rubber mount between the segment and the backing absorbs unwanted vibrations, which is intended to produce a clean finish on hard stone types or, for example, Dekton. This cushioning is also expected to have a positive effect on the tool’s service life. The Gyro-Pro sanding pad is designed for a variety of materials: the range extends from hard stones to marble, ceramics, porcelain, and engineered stone. The Gyro-Pro operates on a similar principle and is said to be even quieter than the Bulls Eye. Here, too, the goal is to minimize vibration and the resulting sound waves, as well as marks or streaks on the material, resulting in a very fine finish. This development is said to be particularly well-suited for hard yet relatively brittle materials such as Dekton and to prevent the problem of “chipping,” i.e., the cracking of edges. According to Youngsun Diatech, the company does not attempt to solve the challenges posed by certain materials with a softer bond, but rather through the design of the tool itself. By the way, we’re planning an editorial hands-on test soon. There is currently no official distributor in the German-speaking region, but the tools can be purchased via the English-language website: www.diamond114.com/eng/
