The building trade should become cultural heritage

that centuries-old craftsmanship is not lost in church construction: the cathedral building lodges. Xanten Cathedral

The Unesco committee will decide at the end of 2020 whether the European cathedral lodges are part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Together with France, Norway, Austria and Switzerland, Germany has nominated the building huts to Unesco. The Bauhütten have been combining traditional craftsmanship and new technology for centuries. They also ensure that Europe’s monumental buildings are preserved and that knowledge is passed on. From Germany, the Bauhütten from Aachen, Bamberg, Passau, Mainz, Lübeck, Soest, Dresden, Ulm, Cologne, Freiburg, Regensburg, Schwäbisch Gmünd and Xanten participated in the application.

The main aim of today’s Bauhütten is to keep craft techniques alive and pass them on. They also convey an understanding of large buildings to the public. The application therefore falls into the Intangible Cultural Heritage category and the Register of Good Practices. The UNESCO committee will decide on the nomination at the end of 2020. The title would not bring any money, but the Dombauhütten hope to attract public attention. The German Dombauhütten are already recognized as a cultural heritage site at national level.
