Several rooms in the annex of the luxury hotel “Les Trois Rois” in Basel, directly on the banks of the Rhine, are currently being renovated by Herzog & de Meuron. The smoking lounge has already been completed in advance. “The Council”, as the cigar lounge is called, is only 40 square meters in size, but the choice of materials creates a remarkably intimate atmosphere.
The 40 square meter room is dominated on two opposite sides by huge, seven meter high fireplace aprons. They are clad with 570 specially designed ceramic tiles. These ceramic elements measure around 30 x 30 centimetres, were individually shaped and partially covered with red and orange glaze. The other two wall claddings consist of custom-made, milled and flamed oak panels; these surfaces are complemented by cast, patinated bronze panels. Oiled oak parquet and patinated bronze panels were also laid on the floor.
The ceramic tiles were designed by Jacques Herzog: each individual tile was handmade by him and the team of architects and produced in close collaboration with the ceramist Esther Lattner and a local art business. Red velvet sofas along the long walls as well as custom-made tables and stools made of dark brown walnut were designed by Herzog & de Meuron and realized together with a Milanese furniture manufacturer. The table lighting was also designed by Herzog & de Meuron. Jacques Herzog describes the project as follows: “‘The Council’ is a room where smoking is allowed – a rather small, intimate room with two fireplaces and a sofa running all around. It differs from the familiar rooms at Les Trois Rois in terms of shape, proportions and furnishings. The room consists of unusual and contrasting materials, with surfaces that you want to touch. All the elements were specially designed for this new location and some were even made by hand. Just like the furnishings with small tables, sofas, stools and lamps, which offer guests space and room for a completely new experience at Les Trois Rois.”

The architects are renovating several rooms in the hotel annexe of Les Trois Rois. The Council is the first room to be completed. It is open daily from 12 noon to midnight for hotel guests, as well as for restaurant and bar guests depending on availability. The renovation of all other rooms in the annex is scheduled to be completed by summer 2025.
