The DGGL Yearbook 2014 is entitled “Future urban green”. The 20 illustrated articles deal with urban quality, management, environmental protection, identification, urban planning and garden culture, cemeteries, parks and everyday greenery.
For a while, it was frowned upon to talk about greenery in the city. After all, green is nothing more than biomass, not bad in itself, but not enough to meet cultural requirements. Today we are talking about green again because it is not only the experts who know what they want to convey with this term. The beneficiaries, i.e. all city dwellers, also know what they owe to urban greenery. Hardly anyone wants to do without trees, shrubs and lawns between their houses. The preservation and maintenance of high-quality green spaces in the city are part of the municipal public services. Nevertheless, it is necessary to fight for adequate budgets and defend the bastions from which the remaining experts in the offices can take action.
It is therefore understandable that the German Society for Garden Art and Landscape Culture has made “Future Urban Green” its theme for the year and published a book on the same subject. A colorful series of 20 illustrated articles thematically addresses many aspects of urban greenery, the quality and design value of which Gustav Meyer wrote about more than 150 years ago. It deals with urban quality, management, environmental protection, identification, urban planning and garden culture, cemeteries, parks and everyday greenery. The book concludes with an outlook on education in a divided world. It reminds us that the situation in most urban centers on this globe is far removed from any standard that we defend or strive for here. There is far more to explore and say about the future of urban greenery than this volume has provided space for.
