Mariska Flau designed a plastic recycling station with a residency program for artists in the West African Republic of Ghana in her master’s thesis at the Technical University of Munich (2020).
The shortlist for our “The Glorious 5” competition has been finalized – discover here which ten offices are in the running for the young talent award. Included: a plastic recycling station in Ghana by Mariska Flau.
In her master’s thesis at the Technical University of Munich (2020), Mariska Flau designed a plastic recycling station with a residency program for artists in the West African Republic of Ghana. The architect is currently working on the actual implementation. The idea for this project close to her heart came about with her German-Ghanaian friend, whose family is providing the land.
With her Design Build project, Mariska Flau is drawing attention to the massive plastic pollution in Ghana, mainly caused by European plastic waste exports, and creating a creative space: Her recycling workshop is also intended to encourage local people to design and produce new objects themselves from plastic waste – from jewelry to cell phone covers to larger pieces of furniture. The project also aims to use architecture and art to create a place that brings people closer together.
Mariska Flau recently completed her Master’s degree at the Technical University of Munich, having completed her Bachelor’s degree in Berlin in 2015. She then took time to find her bearings in the world of architecture and gain professional experience. Projects ranging from architecture in humanitarian areas to the design of luxury apartments and furniture design in London to architecture in film gave her a wide range of insights into exciting areas of architecture.
