In the March issue of G+L, we analyzed what we know about the correlations between cities, green spaces, sport, climate change (particularly exciting!) and mental health, but also what is still missing. Read more in the editorial by Theresa Ramisch.


Mobility

In Hamburg’s new Oberbillwerder district, there are to be mobility hubs instead of parking spaces in public areas. And they can do much more, as the implementation and ideas competition shows.

A special app has been developed for the new 49-euro Deutsche Bahn ticket. This will allow the Germany ticket to be purchased as a subscription. We write more about the new ticket here.

The plan to have trains run faster and more frequently through Germany in future is called the Deutschlandtakt. Originally, the plan was to be realized by 2030, but it is now clear that it will take much longer for the Deutschlandtakt to be implemented.


Projects, projects, projects

The Union Terrace Gardens, a public park in the Scottish coastal city of Aberdeen, have reopened. The refurbishment was preceded by controversy and then a lengthy planning process. The planners from LDA Design closely involved local residents in this process.

The 3D printing of houses is booming and even entire residential areas are now being printed. For example, in Kenya, where the Mvule Gardens housing project is currently under construction.

Together with HENN and C.F. Møller Architects, the landscape architecture firm SINAI from Berlin has won the competition to redesign the Großhadern Hospital in Munich. Six hospital centers with a central park are to be created. The consortium aims to create an environment in which patients feel comfortable and which can contribute to their recovery.

On the edge of Rozelle Bay in Sydney, three towers rise above a new park landscape. Interwoven between the ventilation pipes of the Rozelle Interchange, Studio Chris Fox has developed a striking urban artwork.

The Great American Rail-Trail is an ambitious project by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. The organization is converting former rails into wide off-road trails. Read more about their vision to connect the USA.

A lot is currently happening in Linz in terms of urban planning: the former tobacco factory is being given a new lease of life, the port of Linz is being redesigned with “Projekt Neuland” and the “Linz East-West Climate Axis” project is focusing on Lederergasse. Read on to find out which other projects are planned, who the planners are and what you need to know about all the developments.

The State Garden Show in Kirchheim starts in May 2024 and construction work is already in full swing. We present the Kirchheim local park, a project by SINAI.

Two of the high-rise buildings in the former Hochheide residential park in Duisburg have already been demolished. A third “white giant” will follow this year. Instead, a park with various open spaces for meeting places, community, experiencing nature, sport and exercise is to be created. More about the project here.


What happens in society and the city

A section of the Hachinger Bach stream in Munich’s Berg am Laim district has been running underground in a concrete pipe for around 90 years. Now there is a good chance that the stream will soon flow to the surface there too.

In the fall of 2022, alpine farmers dredged along the Rappenalpbach. Their aim: to repair the damage caused by a flood in August. Bavarian Environment Minister Thorsten Glauber has now announced the restoration of the Rappenalpbach.

In Mexico, a Solar City is being built on the roof of the city’s central market. It could be the largest plant in the world – but there is a lot of competition for this title. Everything about the world’s largest solar park here.

The Frankfurt city parliament adopts a new open space statute that obliges developers to green the façades and roofs of new buildings and conversions. This is not only met with enthusiasm.

A Blue Lane is also planned for the IAA Mobility 2023 in Munich. However, there could be problems with its implementation. What could be new this year: A cycle route through the English Garden.


Prizes and competitions

The Karl Foerster Foundation for Applied Vegetation Science is once again promoting young talent. Students and graduates have until May 15 to submit their work for the Ulmer Prize 2023.

Franz Reschke Landschaftsarchitektur has won first prize for the design of the Neuss State Garden Show in 2026. You can read more about the competition and the proposal here.

The “Garden Futures” exhibition has been on display at the Vitra Design Museum since March 24. It shows in a variety of ways the significance and design of the garden through the ages – and its role for the future.

From May 5 to October 22, you can visit the “Parliament of Plants II” exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein. Read here why it is worth a visit.


Teaching and studies

Architect, office manager and President of the Administrative Board Maren Brakebusch has also been a part-time professor of garden and landscape architecture at the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences since 2022. In January 2023, she gave her inaugural lecture “The Nature of the City.

A study by the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) examines the formation of home ownership and the consumption of living space in Germany. Instead of new builds, the trend is now moving strongly towards ownership of existing buildings. You can read more about the results of the study here.
