Social media platforms are now regarded as one of the most important sources of information – also in everyday working life. Companies, institutions and scientific establishments use the sites as multipliers to communicate their content to a broad and interested audience. Now that the Bavarian Palace Administration has set up its own Instagram and YouTube accounts and runs a new blog, the Restoration Center (RZ) is also regularly contributing its own posts.
Informing the general public about restoration processes and results, the differences between restoration and craftsmanship as well as attitudes and approaches to the treatment of historical cultural assets has always been a concern of the restoration community. Fortunately, there is a great deal of interest in such topics in the public relations work of museums, the press and radio. Very often, however, even with the best of intentions, the content of their reports remains stuck in the clichés of “sprucing up” and “shining in old splendor”. Presenting your own contributions in online media enables the dissemination of easily understandable yet qualified statements on restoration topics.
Photos and short videos with short text contributions are published and shared on Instagram. The RZ contributes a post to the “schloesserverwaltung.bayern” account approximately every two weeks. Three consecutive images show excerpts of a restoration or craft activity or special art techniques. Short comments explain what is shown. Under the hashtag #die3vomrz, you can also access the restoration center’s posts in a bundle.
Short films produced by the RZ itself have been providing the lay public with an insight into the work of restorers and artisans in exhibitions and on the Palace Administration’s website for years. The publication of these videos on the YouTube channel “Bayerische Schlösserverwaltung” will significantly improve the availability of this media. They appear there on their own “playlist” and are therefore easy to find.
The blog “schloesserblog.bayern.de” contains more detailed reports on restoration or arts and crafts projects. Nevertheless, they are formulated in such a way that they make laypeople want to read them. The button “From our restoration center” leads directly to these publications.
Social media as a source of information for colleagues
Posts on social platforms appeal to the general public. However, the RZ’s posts are also aimed at specific target groups. Colleagues from outside the department are given the opportunity to find out about the work of the restoration center. The focus is also on castle guides or teachers, who can pass on the knowledge presented if necessary. Last but not least, restorers or the specialist press can gain an impression of the work of the RZ. This means that these online activities are also recommended via analog media or other channels. Specialist articles and detailed information about the RZ can still be found on the website of the Palace Administration.
Social media enable a dialog between authors and the public. For this reason, we would like to take this opportunity to call on the specialist staff in particular to express their views in the comment fields of the platforms.
