In 2009, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna (KHM) decided to build a new depot in Himberg to house the entire collection. Previously, the collection had been stored at nine locations. The central depot in Himberg was planned and built with energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness in mind. The move was completed three years ago. Time for an initial evaluation.
The depot was to cover the storage requirements of the KHM and the associated buildings for the next 30 years. Using prefabricated components, the building was completed within eight months. And this despite the fact that its total usable area is around 14,000 square meters. The materials and technologies used enable a stable climate with minimal energy consumption.
The relocation of around one million objects from nine different art collections and three archives was carried out in several campaigns. According to the management’s specifications, all “externally” stored collections were housed in the new central depot by the end of 2011, followed by collections from in-house depots in 2012 and 2013.
Storage technology and climate control are just as much a part of the comprehensive conservation strategy as integrated pest management and housekeeping.
Climate control should be carried out at the lowest possible cost, making artificial, energy-intensive and therefore cost-intensive air conditioning unnecessary. A building to passive house standard, which does not require conventional building heating due to its good thermal insulation, was not feasible within the given budget, but was also not necessary. Compared to previous new depot buildings, a highly efficient and simple building concept had to be developed:
The majority of the heating and cooling requirements are covered by geothermal energy. 32 probes, each 100 meters long, extract heat from the ground or, in the case of cooling, return it to the ground. Thanks to its construction as a solid reinforced concrete building with component activation, the almost windowless building can compensate for temperature fluctuations as well as possible, guaranteeing a constant temperature of 20 °C. Humidification – target value 50 % RH all year round – takes place in recirculation mode via filters with a low proportion of fresh air, which ensures continuous air circulation in the depot rooms. Commercially available floor-standing units, a maximum of four per 1500 square meter fire compartment, dehumidify the air as required.
Almost three years after the new depot went into operation on July 6, 2011, an evaluation of the current situation was carried out, taking into account operational, structural and technical improvement options. You can find out the results in RESTAURO 5/2014.
