Overheating, particulate matter, heavy rain, stress: the green roof seems to be a simple antidote to many “urban problems”. We present roof landscapes in all their facets.
Do we need different roofs?
Climate change and its consequences are plunging many cities into extremes. Heavy rainfall and the urban heat island effect are crying out for more greenery. But where, when space is becoming increasingly scarce in times of immigration and densification? It’s worth looking upwards. The way out is: the roof.
Green counterpoint
In the new Europaviertel in Frankfurt am Main, residential and office buildings are crowded together, leaving little room for greenery. Instead of creating even more retail space, the managers of the Skyline Plaza shopping center opted for a rooftop park.
New roots
The Biesbosch Museum in the Netherlands has always been covered by a pyramid landscape. The old architecture has been given a green cap with the renovation. Suddenly everything looks more modern – and much closer to the cultural heritage of the region.
