Inspired by the characteristic brutalism of Belgrade, the urban café Chernyi Cooperative Coffee Roasters was created. FREYA Architects focused on geometry and materials. On the one hand, this resulted in a design of the space characterized by rectangular shapes. On the other hand, the office used the existing materials and supplemented them to create a mixture of wood, concrete, brick and metal. The historic brick walls from 1921 were partially retained. The office used the bricks from the demolished walls to create a cash desk. This mixture of old and new materials created a link between past and present. Large floor-to-ceiling windows provide plenty of natural light and round off the modern overall impression.
