Urban land
Away from the conurbations and metropolitan areas of Europe, there are areas that are neither rural nor urban. This is urban land. The urban countryside faces the same problems as the big cities: mobility, quality of life, climate change. These and other aspects will be discussed at the Urban Land Conference No 1 on September 26, 2019 in Ulm.
The big questions about the future have been around for a long time: How will we live and work, how will we get around? How will climate protection be integrated? How can we improve the quality of life and promote the economy – but not at the expense of the environment? At the heart of these questions are major cities such as Berlin, London and Paris, because urban centers are most affected by the growing population. Exploding rents and exhausted infrastructures are evidence of this.
However, if you shift the focus from the metropolitan regions to the small and medium-sized centers, you quickly realize that resources are dwindling there too. Settlement growth and sustainability must find a new balance so that resources can be used efficiently and fairly. Regions such as Baden-Württemberg, the Swiss Mittelland or Belgium’s dense urban network are examples of this.
In Europe, many people live outside the traditional city centers. They are spread out on the periphery and along the transport axes, in new residential areas, existing villages, in the agricultural sector or close to branches of influential companies. This area is no longer considered rural, but is still far from being urban. It is urban land.
An international conference of the InnoSÜD sub-project “Urban Land” at Biberach University of Applied Sciences on September 26, 2019 in Ulm will deal with urban land and the issues of the future.
More than 15 speakers from Germany and around the world will contribute perspectives from various disciplines to the sessions, including
