Heat protection, noise reduction, flood protection, microclimate supporters – on the way to the sustainable, liveable city of the future, urban oases are elementary game changers. In the September issue, we therefore present a selection of particularly innovative green projects in urban areas and discuss why visionary open space planning must now go far beyond parklets and pocket parks.

Tiny or huge oases

46 offices, 35 cities, 5 countries – no less than 54 very special projects are presented to you, dear readers, in this issue of G+L. 54 projects that could hardly be more diverse in terms of scale, design and objectives. What they all have in common is that they create oases in the city, from tiny to gigantic, that give you a sense of relief.

Rest and relaxation

By this we mean that feeling when you are traveling from A to B and the city suddenly resembles a desert. Because suddenly – and for whatever reason – everything becomes too much. Too many people, too much traffic, no good air, too much noise. Your mood sinks with your circulation and all you long for is fresh air and a place to rest. No matter what time of year it is. Then it’s these rooms that can create an oasis of relaxation and peace in the stuffiest, busiest city.

54 project calls

With no more than this rudimentary definition in hand, which at the same time could hardly be more apt, we asked around 100 landscape architecture firms and city councils to send us their relevant projects from recent years this summer. The response to the call for projects was enormous and we are delighted to be able to present so many of the submitted projects, at least briefly, in this issue. The full presentation will follow online.

GaLaBau Nuremberg

At this year’s GaLaBau trade fair, which takes place in Nuremberg from September 11 to 14, our urban oasis projects also demonstrate extremely well where the benchmark for sustainable, green, liveable open spaces must lie. They are a symbol of the importance of landscape architecture for our society and should therefore be discussed as an inspiration for future planning. I look forward to discussing this with you on site in Nuremberg.
