A Rare Stone Deposit

Silver quartzite is well known to wellness enthusiasts as a building material for thermal baths, saunas, and swimming pools. The light-gray stone is extremely durable and is characterized by low water absorption and high slip resistance. In addition, due to its high silica content, it has antibacterial properties and is therefore particularly suitable for hygienic use in wet areas; swimming pools can even be lined with silver quartzite in the underwater zone. Steam rooms and saunas can also be equipped with it without hesitation. Furthermore, the STEIN’s high heat retention capacity makes it ideal for use in wellness areas.

Yet very few people know that silver quartzite can not only beautify wellness centers but also benefit their visitors—in the form of relaxing and purifying cosmetic treatments. With its properties, it is virtually predestined for use in naturopathic beauty care. The stone is found exclusively in the Pfitscher Valley in South Tyrol, a high valley that stretches from Sterzing to the Zillertal Alps, and is quarried near Pfitsch by Grünig Natursteine GmbH. What Makes Silver Quartzite So Special

In naturopathy, the quartz content of the STEIN is said to emit purifying vibrations that activate the body’s self-cleansing powers. The STEIN is rich in minerals such as magnesium, potassium, and zinc, which also have a deacidifying effect when applied topically. Its high heat retention capacity makes it very pleasant to use on the skin. In the “Urstein” massage, for example, after applying lavender and juniper oil, small silver quartzite cubes and cylinders are placed on the skin to allow them to take effect. The non-profit organization IAKS Germany is looking for the sports facilities of tomorrow.

The International Association of Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS Germany) has launched a competition for modern and inspiring sports and exercise facilities. Sport performs many important tasks in our society, including creating community and promoting inclusion and integration. Sport needs spaces to be practiced. As many of our German sports facilities date back to the 1970s, we are now looking for inspiring sports spaces for today’s society.The competition is aimed at students, but also young professionals in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning and design (graduated no more than two years ago).

“We need a profound cultural change. The perspective on our sports facilities must change – from sports functionality to architecture for people,” says Prof. Dr. Kähler, sports development planner and chairman of IAKS Deutschland e.V. With the innovation competition for students, the IAKS is pursuing a clear goal: the transformation of standardized sports facilities into needs-based, open and versatile exercise spaces.

The competition invites young architects, designers and planners to rethink sports spaces. We are looking for creative, visionary and feasible designs for sports halls, outdoor sports facilities and outdoor pools – spaces that meet the social challenges of the present and provide new impetus for public spaces.

Four cities, four plots of land, four different starting situations: The competition is based on real sites provided by the cities of Mannheim, Heilbronn, Bonn and Koblenz. This practical basis makes the competition particularly tangible – both for the participants and for the municipalities interested in the ideas. Although there is no guarantee of implementation, the planning challenges are real.

In Mannheim, the selected site is located in the Seckenheim district, on a derelict conversion area of a former US military site. In addition to a planned fire station, a sports hall is also to be built here – as part of a new district.

Heilbronn is providing a site close to the city center, nestled between schools, residential buildings and hotel developments. The aim is to design a multifunctional sports hall that can be used for school and club sports as well as for recreational sports.

In the Pennenfeld sports park in Bonn , the approximately 800 square meter area of a former shot put facility is to be redesigned. The task: to create an attractive outdoor sports facility that motivates children, teenagers and young adults to take part in individual sports.

The Oberwerth outdoor pool in Koblenz is situated in a scenic location on the Rhine island of the same name. The challenge: to design a place for exercise, recreation and socializing that meets both tourist and local needs.

Students and graduates up to two years after graduation are eligible to take part. The competition is aimed at people from the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, design and related disciplines.

Both individual and group work is permitted. There are deliberately few limits to creativity: In addition to complete designs for entire facilities, ideas for individual spatial elements are also welcome in task part B; these should offer innovative solutions to the challenges of our sports facilities through their integration into the sports space.

Entries must be submitted by July 1, 2025, and the final designs can be submitted by August 12, 2025. A total of 5,000 euros in prize money is available. An interdisciplinary jury with representatives from architecture, planning, science, municipal administration and federal institutes will be responsible for the evaluation.

The award-winning projects will be presented at FSB 2025 in Cologne – one of the leading international trade fairs for sports and leisure facilities. Architects, planners, local authorities and companies will meet there. IAKS Germany will also disseminate the winning designs within its extensive network. The ideas will thus find their way into numerous architectural offices, administrations and companies in the sports facility sector.

For the participants, this means visibility, reach and the opportunity to position themselves in the professional landscape at an early stage. The competition sees itself as a platform to make innovative minds known – and shows that good design not only has form, but also a social function.

The background to the competition is serious: many sports facilities in Germany date back to the 1970s and 1980s. They were planned according to the logic of competitive sport and hardly meet the requirements of inclusion, everyday exercise or informal meeting places.

We are therefore looking for concepts that respond to the changed realities of life: the lack of exercise in the population, social isolation and the desire for flexible use. The brief explicitly names these problems – and calls for a creative debate.

Architecture thus becomes a tool that not only reflects social change, but actively shapes it.

The IAKS competition wants more than just functional sports facilities. It is looking for ideas for sports facilities that are also recreational areas, learning spaces, meeting places and exercise areas. The real task, the expert jury and the broad visibility make the competition a worthwhile opportunity for anyone who wants to get to grips with the sports facility construction of the future.

The publication “Radwege und Verkehrswende. A history of headwinds and tailwindsby the German Institute of Urban Affairs looks at cycling – from the past to the present. It shows the transport policy potential of cycling. The publication also outlines what is needed for a successful transport transition.

The pandemic and, above all, the associated lockdowns have changed people. They have developed new habits for moving around their neighborhoods, cities and surroundings. As a result, there were suddenly more pedestrians than ever before. Bicycles also appeared in unexpected numbers. Cycling was particularly attractive because the lockdown had reduced car traffic. Pop-up cycle paths appeared in some cities. In many places, these were intended to be temporary, but they are now indispensable. The bicycle hype can now be seen in many cities around the world.

Bottlenecks despite the bike hype

Although the signs are pointing to cycle paths and a turnaround in traffic, progress is slow. Many local authorities do not yet have any feasible projects. Or they lack the staff or the necessary funds. In addition, road traffic law or other standards often block changes. The priority given to car traffic is often a major brake on the necessary change. This is also reflected in the title of a new publication by the German Institute of Urban Affairs. With “Cycling and traffic turnaround. A story of headwinds and tailwinds”, the dilemma is already outlined in the title. The publication draws attention to the current road traffic regulations and makes it clear how the strong focus on the car came about. However, it also shows that the signs are currently good for cycling and the traffic turnaround.

Many people associate the car with prosperity and mobility. But the enormous increase in automobility is increasingly limiting our living space and our health. Cars have become a disruptive factor in many urban structures. This was not always the case. When the bicycle became affordable around 1900, bicycles soon became a means of mass transportation. Cycling got its first tailwind. Riding streetcars, on the other hand, was expensive. And the mass distribution of private cars was initially unthinkable. That only came after the Second World War. The first and early cycle paths were built on and at the side of roadways. This allowed cyclists to ride alongside the dirt roads that had been soiled by horses and carts. It was only later that cycle paths moved to the side of the road, often separated by a raised kerb.

The first headwinds arose in the 1930s. During the Nazi era, motor vehicles became a national symbol of progress. Hitler announced a major road construction plan. From then on, road planning was primarily concerned with getting disruptive bicycles out of the way. The flow of car traffic was given top priority. The Reich Road Traffic Regulations from 1934 literally pushed cyclists to the sidelines. They also had to ride one behind the other. The federal states and provinces were encouraged to build cycle paths to get unwanted bicycles off the road. But the time until the Second World War was too short for this.

Traffic turnaround started in 1973

In the years after the war, the number of cars multiplied. At the same time, cycling fell to a historically low level. Many cycle paths fell into disrepair and were dismantled or repurposed. Only cycle paths were built along federal highways in order to reduce traffic congestion and facilitate the flow of car traffic. The first turnaround in traffic came in the 1970s. After the Club of Rome warned of the limits to growth in 1972 and the oil crisis in 1973 led to driving bans on Sundays, there was a kind of turning point. The modern environmental movement emerged and brought about a rethink.

The return of cycling

The bicycle slowly returned to the transport policy agenda. In 1983, the first program for environmental relief through bicycle traffic was published. In addition, research initiatives for model projects for bicycle-friendly cities flourished. A concept for the transport transition emerged after the UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio in 1992. This was followed by various resolutions that had an impact on cycling. In 1997, there was even an amendment to the road traffic regulations for bicycles. In 2002, 2012 and 2021, the German government adopted a National Cycling Plan.

The renewed tailwind for cycle paths and the traffic turnaround initiated various funding programs. Since 2013, the Federal Ministry for the Environment has also been funding municipal cycling investments. Since 2018, the federal government has been supporting the construction of high-speed cycle paths. And thanks to the pressure to act on climate protection, the Federal Ministry of Transport currently has over 1.4 billion euros in various funding programs. However, innovative technologies, electric-assisted bicycles and bicycle-based logistics and delivery services are also gaining in importance and conquering the market and the streetscape.

Despite positive developments, cycling and the traffic turnaround are not making rapid progress. According to Difu, many local authorities lack projects that can be implemented or the will to do so. This is because road traffic law and other standards are still making change difficult. Any change that could affect the convenience of car traffic or cost parking spaces has a hard time. In addition, local authorities lack the staff to apply for funding and to plan and implement investments in cycle paths. In many places, municipal finances are also insufficient to raise the necessary funds.

Nevertheless, the long-standing head of the mobility research department at the German Institute of Urban Affairs has never found the time to be as favorable for cycling as it is at the moment. In addition to great pressure to act, there is a change in values and numerous innovations. More and more resolutions and concepts are supporting cycling. And there is more funding than ever before. This gives us reason to continue to believe in cycling and the traffic turnaround and to push ahead with their implementation.
