With almost 208,000 people, the Leipzig Book Fair has seen the biggest rush of visitors in its history. Graduate restorer Boris Frohberg took a look around for us and discovered some interesting titles.
From March 23 to 26, 2017, almost 2,500 exhibitors presented themselves to around 208,000 visitors in the five exhibition halls at the Leipzig Book Fair. Talks, readings, autograph sessions, lectures, discussions as well as hands-on activities and competitions were offered, and there were debates about the reconstruction of the Garrison Church in Potsdam or the Berlin City Palace. Europe’s largest reading festival “Leipzig reads” took place in conjunction with the trade fair, with over 3000 events. There was plenty for restorers to discover.
The volumes of the Naumburg Kolleg “Identifikation der Pigmente polychromer Skulpturen”, “Die Polychromie der Naumburger Stifterfiguren” and “Kunsttechnologische Untersuchung der Bildwerke des Naumburger Lettners”, all published by Friedrich Pustet in Regensburg, are important. New specialist articles on stone restoration can be found in the publication “Parochialkirche in Berlin” by Michael-Imhof Verlag. Restoration and reconstruction of room and architectural façades is the subject of the new publication “Das Zivilgericht in Halle (Saale)”, published this spring by the Saxony-Anhalt State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and Archaeology. Further specialist articles on current stone restoration can be found in the volume on “Magdeburger Reiter” (Schnell & STEIN, Regensburg).
The latest research results, especially on panel painting restoration, are presented in “Cranach in Zwickau” on the retable in St. Catherine’s Church, also published by Schnell & STEIN (Regenburg). The publications of Deutscher Kunstverlag take into account aspects of monument conservation and restoration: “Bunte Stadt – Neues Bauen” (Colourful City – New Building) on the reform architecture of Carl Krayl and the expressive colorful painting of house facades, enriched by the reconstruction of the Bruno Taut kiosk from Magdeburg, “Klingende Wasser” (Sounding Waters) on the existence and reconstruction of automatophones and water organs, and “Die Grabmalkunst von Karl Friedrich Schinkel” (The Tomb Art of Karl Friedrich Schinkel), including a survey of the current state of the art. In addition, the comprehensive volume “Frühgotische Grosskreuze in Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt und Thüringen”, including its inventory and restoration history, is highly recommended, as is the publication “Land der Moderne”, which deals with the reconstruction of the color versions in the reform settlements and garden cities (both published by Janos Stekovic).
Light, color, research
Important research findings on building history as well as information on building design and coloring can be found in the volume “Karolingerzeitliche Mauertechnik in Deutschland und der Schweiz”, while the publication “Werkspuren” (all Schnell & STEIN, Regensburg) provides technical information on material processing in ancient construction. Information on the subject of light and color can be found in the book “Der Lachende Engel. On the traces of the stones at Regensburg Cathedral” (Schnell & STEIN, Regensburg). The volume “Stuck in Deutschland” contains various information on the history of the craft as well as material and execution techniques, while “Herrschaftslandschaft im Umbruch – 1000 Jahre Merseburger Dom” (Schnell & STEIN) presents the status of interdisciplinary research on the subject.
Important art historical exhibitions in 2017
The exhibition programme was enriched by the presentation of the “German Digital Library” and the 3D visualization of construction phases and research results using the example of the Luther memorials in Wittenberg. It is also worth mentioning this year’s important art-historical exhibitions, which were presented as part of the book fair: “Wonders of Rome” in the view of the North from antiquity to the present at the Archbishop’s Diocesan Museum in Paderborn (31.03 to 13.08.), “A treasure not of gold” about Benno von Meissen, Saxony’s first saint in the Albrechtsburg in Meissen (12.05. to 05.11.), “Painting in the 19th century” in the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin (30.03. to 30.07.) and “Potsdam vedute of the 18th and 19th centuries” in the Potsdam Museum (01.04. to 11.06.2017).
