In the UNESCO-protected Alto Douro Vinhateiro region, the Quinta de Adorigo Winery was established as a vineyard that combines architecture, landscape, and wine production into a holistic concept. Designedby Atelier Sérgio Rebelo, the building is part of a family-run wine tourism project that will eventually include a hotel. The architecture responds sensitively to the centuries-old cultural landscape of the Douro Valley and reinterprets traditional building methods using contemporary designs and sustainable technologies.
Winery Architecture Follows the Topography
The architecture emerges directly from the landscape. The curved, horizontal building volumes echo the characteristic terraces and zigzag lines of the vineyards without literally copying them. Instead, the building follows the natural contours of the terrain and forms the basis for an efficient production process.
The individual building blocks are connected in a terraced arrangement, forming a spatial continuum that takes advantage of the property’s natural elevation changes. The result is an architecture that blends harmoniously into the cultural landscape while enabling optimal workflows.
Gravity Replaces Energy-Intensive Conveyor Technology
A key feature of the Quinta de Adorigo Winery is the traditional principle of gravity-fed wine production, which has been used in the Douro region for centuries.
The production process proceeds in stages from top to bottom. The grapes are processed on the upper levels and flow into the production areas below solely due to the natural slope of the terrain. This allows for the near-total elimination of mechanical conveyor systems, which reduces both energyconsumption—slate, wood, exposed concrete, colors, thermal mass, solar radiation, geothermal energy, enthalpy, fire protection, energy demand, central, wood, wood: A natural material that can be used to manufacture formwork and scaffolding. It is often used for construction projects in the field of timber construction. and for production and logistics facilities.
These accolades underscore the project’s significance as an exemplary combination of sustainable architecture, regional building culture, and modern wine production.
